Sailing, Competent Crew Course - Sydney
Forget the mystery. Learning to sail is easy, fun and spectacular on Sydney Harbour – A.K.A the greatest harbour in the world. Throughout these practical courses you will sail beautiful Beneteau Yachts with people at your level of skill. Your confidence and knowledge will grow quickly under the guidance of our instructors, all of whom are well-respected Australian yachtsmen. Highly qualified with both the Australian Yachting Federation (AYF) and the Maritime Services Board they are still very active on the international racing and cruising circuit. The techniques and precise manoeuvres taught in the Competent Crew course will reward you with a well earned sense of accomplishment. This course is taught aboard Beneteau 33.7 or new Sydney 36 yachts, among others.
Syllabus Comprises:
- Sail shape and trim
- Helming techniques
- Sail changes
- Use of spinnaker pole
- Reducing sail area - reefing and head
- Man overboard procedures
- Safety on board
- Anchoring and mooring
Format: 12 hours total Practical: Four 3 hour onboard lessons Maximum of 4 students per yacht. Once you have begun sailing you will want to be on the water all the time. If you are keen to do more courses consider the night sailing, offshore or perhaps you endeavour to be skipper (enquire for more details on any of these). Or simply enjoy the yachty culture with twilight racing or friendly rivalry on club racing days.

Fitness and Experience
- There are no specific fitness requirements for sailing
- You must have completed the Introductory Course or undergo a 3-hour evaluation which can be deducted from your course price
- If you have little or no experience we recommend you start with the Introductory Course
- If you have any medical concerns, please let us know at the time of booking so that we can accommodate you
- You need to be comfortable around water
What to Bring/Wear
- Wear comfortable clothing suitable to the weather
- Pack a warm sweater or windproof jacket
- Wear shoes with white, soft soles. Do not wear black soled or hard shoes. Note, your shoes will get wet!
- Sunscreen, hat, beanie, sunglasses
- Pen and writing paper
- Bring lunch or lunch money to purchase something from the shops
- A bottle of water to keep on deck
- You may wish to leave a change of clothes in the car on wet weather days
What is Supplied
- Professional instruction – theory and practical
- All technical and safety equipment - including hooded sailing waterproof jackets and life jackets
- Certificate at successful completion of the course
- Soft drinks are included at the end of the lesson
