What is Skydiving?
Many people ask 'what is skydiving all about?' and 'Why would anyone want to jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane?!' Why? Because Skydiving is the adventure of a lifetime!
There are drop zones and skydiving schools all over Australia where you can do a tandem skydive, strapped to the front of a tandem master. Or you can learn to skydive by completing the Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) course. It's as early as Stage One where you'll complete your solo skydive with your own parachute!
Skydiving in Australia is regulated by the Australian Parachute Federation (APF) who ensure safety standards are second to none. The crew at LIVE Adrenalin have brought together the best operators around Australia. So your first skydive will always be with a reputable skydiving centre with the highest safety standards.
First step is to decide on the skydiving school, then, it's time to head to the dropzone! You may decide to do a tandem skydive as your first jump so that you can sit back and enjoy the thrill without the intensive training or having to learn about the gear. However, if learning to skydive is something you've always wanted to do, jump straight into Stage One of the AFF Course to learn to jump solo!
Most people expect that free falling towards the earth will be an uncontrollable experience. In fact, there's no falling feeling at all - it's a sensation of flying high above the earth with the best view in the world!
What is skydiving? Skydiving is freedom!
Tandem Skydiving
Tandem Skydiving is the fastest and easiest way to experience the excitement of freefall skydiving, life's ultimate thrill. You will be attached to the front of an experienced Tandem Jump Master and encounter the awesome sensation of Freefall Skydiving. All the thrills without the intensive training or responsibility of opening your own parachute.
You'll begin your adventure by being kitted out in a jump suit. Following this, is a simple ground briefing including a few 'dirt dives' (a practice exit from a mock-up plane) along with an overview of canopy control and landing procedures. You then climb into the plane, take-off and begin the twenty-minute climb to an altitude of between 10, 000 - 14,000 ft, depending which skydiving school you attend.
When you reach this point, a final systems check is carried out. You have now reached the point of no return. The only way down is to jump! Nothing can prepare you for the sensation of stepping into the sky. As the adrenalin rush kicks in, you'll feel like you're floating on a cushion of air for 45 seconds as you travel at over 200 kph in a 7,500ft freefall. The wind rushes into your face and the heart is racing.
If you are having your jump videoed, a cameraman will appear as if from no where and station himself in front of you to capture the excitement forever. At about 4,500ft the parachute is deployed. The silence is amazing, the view sensational and during the 5-minute descent you will be taught how to fly the parachute to a gentle landing.
Skydiving is one of life's greatest adventures. The feeling is indescribable, and the buzz lasts for weeks. Learning skydiving is a must for those who love to fly!
If you just want a taste of skydiving, a Tandem Skydive is the way to go! If you become addicted and would like to jump again and again, we strongly suggest you do the Accelerated Freefall Skydiving Course (AFF). Contact the LIVE Adrenalin Adventure Consultants for more details on 1300 791 793.
Learning to Skydive - Accelerated Freefall Course (AFF)
Developed in the USA the AFF course is the most comprehensive introduction to sports Skydiving. The course consists of 9 stages comprising a minimum of 12 jumps (assuming you don't have to repeat any jumps).
Learn to Skydive: Stage 1 - This is your first step to skydiving solo! The day begins with thorough ground training in a classroom. Once you’ve taken in as much skydiving information as possible you’ll complete a written exam. On successful completion of the written exam, and with your Instructors endorsement you will be ready to take your first solo leap into the sky!
You will be taught and examined on various aspects of the equipment, freefall procedures (stability, altitude awareness, etc), canopy control and of course, emergency procedures.
The Stage 1 jump is designed to ensure you can exit the aircraft smoothly, adopt a stable flying position, maintain altitude awareness and locate your deployment handle.
Please note: you may be required to complete your Stage 1 jump as a Tandem Skydive. This is to consolidate your ground training and canopy handling skills if you do not pass the written or practical exams during your ground training. This is at the exclusive discretion of your course instructor and no discussion will be entered into. Once you have demonstrated an understanding of the skills learnt during your ground training, you can progress to a jump with your own parachute and 2 Instructors accompanying you in freefall.
The freefall during the Stage 1 jump is carried out with two instructors on either side of you, holding onto the grips on your jumpsuit. This way they can help maintain your stability whilst in freefall and check your altitude awareness until deployment. The instructors are responsible for your wellbeing and will only let you jump if they think you are ready. If they give you the nod, then relax, it means you are prepared. They should know, with many thousands of jumps between them! Your instructors will closely monitor and supervise you during freefall as you put your ground training into action.
Once you have successfully deployed your parachute, you will commence the final stage of your jump -canopy control and landing. At this stage, your instructors will be several thousand feet below. You'll have clear air to fly in whilst you are guided back to earth by your Target Control Officer (TCO). The TCO will use ground based visual devices (a bloody big arrow on a swivel) along with radio comms (a small one way radio attached to the side of your helmet). These will assist in guiding you in for an accurate touchdown. The TCO will help you for all jumps up to stage 9 and then you're on your own!
Your parachute system has been specially designed for students and comprises of a ram air main canopy, a ram air reserve canopy and an Automatic Activation Device (AAD). Once at the drop zone, fitting and adjusting the system takes only a few minutes before your final rehearsals with the 2 instructors assigned to your jump.
Learn to Skydive: Stage 2 - The focus of Stage 2 is Body Control - leg and arm awareness, an introduction to turns and forward and backward motion. You will also be working, as on all jumps, with height awareness and stability in the free fall, again jumping with 2 Instructors.
Learn to Skydive: Stage 3 - this is your last jump with two instructors. Your mission on this jump is to maintain heading and hover control, without the assistance of your instructors. Once you have adopted a stable flying position one of your instructors will let go of your grips and fly to face off in front of you. If you remain stable the other instructor will release your grips but will remain very close by to aid with stability if required.
Learn to Skydive: Stages 4-8 - require only one instructor. You will be given a 20 Minute ground briefing before each jump. You will be learning more about heading control, 360 degree turns, backloops (summersaults), tracking, fall rates and docking. You'll also carry out a solo exit, with your instructor diving after you.
Learn to Skydive: Stage 9 - is known as your "Hop & Pop" stage, literally meaning, you jump out at a lower than usual altitude (usually around 3500 - 4000 feet) and deploy your canopy straight away. This stage is designed to familiarise skydivers with low altitude exits such as in the case of an aircraft emergency. As your skydiving progresses you’ll find that Hop & Pops can be extremely fun and great for focusing on canopy skills.
Congratulations! You have now completed your AFF Course and are ready to work towards achieving your A Licence. Most people take this time to complete their B-Rels which consist of 10 stages. These jumps are carried out one on one with an instructor and are designed to teach you how to fly relative to another skydiver. You will have to carry out multiple turns, advanced fly arounds, and docks whilst retaining height relativity. These jumps are great fun and you will learn a lot!
Upon successful completion of your B-Rel table and your landing accuracy jumps you should have enough jumps to qualify you for your A Licence, thus making you a fully licenced solo skydiver! Congratulations, the sky is now your playground!
